We had a great time this week at our Awakening Youth Service! We started out with a short game where each person took three M&M’s. After everyone had their M&M’s , you had to tell someone an interesting fact about yourself that was determined by what color of M&M you had.
Our worship time was very powerful as the teens all responded to an altar call at the end of worship declaring that they desired to know God more and go deeper in their walk with him.
This week we continued in our COUNTERFEIT Series as Lydia spoke on Counterfeit Culture. Webster’s definition of “culture” is the act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties; especially by education. We have seen how our culture has moved away from God’s original plan in the areas of how we view God, creation vs. evolution, marriage, etc. Satan presents an appealing “counterfeit”, fraudulent culture by mixing just enough of the truth in with a lie in order to create a culture that moves away from God.
Lydia illustrated this by using Oreos! We blindfolded four volunteers to do a taste test. The first thing tested was a generic brand of Oreo. Proving they knew their Oreos, three out of the four volunteers knew it was an imposter! The second test wasn’t as successful as the volunteers were given a cookie that was half of a generic Oreo and half of a real one. Three out of the four volunteers said it was a real Oreo. By the time they received the real Oreo to taste, two out of the four said it was another generic. The point of the illustration was that like the mixed Oreo, Satan mixes in enough of the truth with his lies to deceive us into believing his lies and Counterfeit Culture. Once we have believed and followed his lies, it is often times hard to distinguish and discern the what the truth really is, just as half of the volunteers couldn’t tell which cookie was the real Oreo after they had eaten the cookie that was mixed.
Christ tells us in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” It is important that we all spend time getting to know God’s voice better through prayer and reading his Word to protect ourselves from being deceived by Satan’s counterfeit culture!
